Ann Huntington

          Ann's Picks:

Books! Books! Books! The written word has been a passion of mine since childhood.  I always thought of our local library as a castle.  An enormous round gray stone structure with a turet, is the picture my childhood memory paints.  I loved wandering through the stacks, imagining stories based on intriguing cover art.  Once a book was chosen, I'd devour it! I wonder if I went back, would it still look like the magical castle I remember.  I do know the reading was and still is magical.  My love of reading and learning led me to become an elementary teacher with a reading specialty.  Helping children develop that love of reading was so rewarding.  I couldn't have chosen a more incredible career.  I had always thought that after I retired, woking in a small people-friendly bookstore would be the best thing ever.  And here I am at Beach Books.  Talking books with customers and helping them select their next favorite read is a joy.

I enjoy all kinds of reading, but historical fiction is a favorite.  A few of my recent favorites include: The Help by Kathryn Stockett, Pearl of China by Anchee Min, Little Bee by Chris Cleave, and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.  Tana French, Geraldine Brooks, Anita Diamant, Ann Patchet, Eric Larson, Jeffery Deaver, Ivan Doig and Wallace Stegner are a few of the other authors I enjoy.

Enzo is the funny, observant narrator of this book, who just happens to be a dog. He's a philosopher who tells you the story of family with love and devotion. You'll laugh out loud, you'll cry, but you won't be able to put it down. You don't need to be a dog lover or race car enthusiast. It just may be your favorite read of the year.

The Book Thief (Paperback)

$12.99
ISBN-13: 9780375842207

The setting is 1939 Nazi Germany. The narrator is the voice of Death. It sounds like depressing read. Surprise! It's not. The story, itself, paired with the author's figurative language made for an amazing read. I couldn't put it down.
